Motoise is an old shrine that has been revered as a symbol of the region since ancient times. This is a belief in the more fundamental god Amaterasu, the original deity of all the gods, than in the local deity who nurtures and protects the local area. Before Kodai was transferred to the sacred place of Ise, It was proudly known as the Motomiya of Ise, which was enshrined here for four years. The shrine's legend says that Motoise was founded 2,060 years ago, but many worshipers are impressed by the simple appearance of the shrine building surrounded by a deep natural forest. Feeling the weight of the history of the ancient world, touching the spirit that drifts in the sacred precincts, and feeling that a divine realm is emerging where gods, people, and nature are fused together, you will feel a sense of freshness, as if your body and mind have been washed. They convey a variety of emotions, such as "I feel a sense of fulfillment" and "I feel a sense of fulfillment in life." Isn't this emotion and feeling the origin of the Motoise faith?

Amaterasu Omikami

The highest god among the gods of Takamagahara and the god of the sun. He is the ancestral deity of the imperial family and the guardian deity of our people. According to the Nihon Shoki, when you were born, you were praised for being ``beautiful in color and shining brightly within the six points,'' and were considered to be the most glorious beings in the world of the gods. It is also said to be the god of the day.
The divine blessings exert divine virtue in all sorts of things, such as national security, abundant grains, and improved vitality.

The deep faith of the common people as the former shrine of Ise

According to tradition, in the 39th year of the 10th Emperor Sujin (59 B.C.E.), in accordance with the teachings of the Imperial Goddess, ``Search for a separate grand shrine and perform a pacifying festival,'' he searched for a sacred place to be enshrined forever. It is said that he left Wakasanui Village (present-day Miwa, Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture), where he had been enshrined until then. It is said that he first moved to Tadaba (Tamba), and that our company was founded based on that history. After being enshrined here for four years, Kodaijin went to various other places, and in the 26th year of Emperor Suinin (4th year B.C.E.), he was enshrined at the sacred place on the Isuzu River in Ise (present-day Ise Grand Shrine). I did. (The above complete map of Tango Naiku is owned by Maizuru City)

For this reason, our shrine was called ``Moto Ise Naiku,'' ``Moto Ise Kotai Jingu,'' and ``Daijingu-san'' as the original shrine of Ise Grand Shrine's Naiku, and it continues to be deeply worshiped by the common people.

Motoise Mairi is once again popularized by passionate worshipers.

Two thousand years ago, this area was part of the primeval forest of the Tango Mountains, centered around Mt. Oe, and is thought to have been a hidden, unexplored region. It is estimated that the common people began visiting the shrine during the Kamakura, Muromachi, and Sengoku eras, but during the Tokugawa period, it became a passageway for sankin kotai.Respect for the Miyazu lordreceived and suddenlyWidely worshiped. Until the Meiji period, it is said that 80,000 people visited the shrine each year, and there were 10 inns, teahouses, and souvenir shops at the foot of the mountain. At that time, boats on the Yura River were used, and it was only a 4km walk from the pier, so it seems that many people of all ages, men and women, came to pray. Due in part to the discontinuation of the boat service, the number of worshipers decreased dramatically from the Taisho era to the 1950s, and Motoise continued to decline.
Then, from around the late 1960s, with the development of transportation networks, Motoise Mairi became popular again. One of the characteristics of this shrine is that it is visited by a large number of devout worshipers and religious groups, rather than regular tourists.
